Siana Airstrip

Siana Airstrip is a graded airstrip in the Siana conservancy country east of Sekenani Gate, outside the Masai Mara National Reserve boundary. It serves conservancy camps on the eastern approaches, and whether it serves yours depends on that camp’s membership and access arrangements rather than on how near it looks.

Does it serve your camp?

Which camps does Siana Airstrip serve?

Siana serves camps in the Siana conservancy area that hold access to it, principally properties on the eastern approaches to the Mara. It does not serve reserve camps by default, and several eastern camps are collected from Keekorok instead even though Siana can look nearer on a map.

The eastern corner is where guests most often assume the wrong strip, because two candidates sit close together and the deciding factor is invisible on a map. If your camp is inside the reserve boundary, compare Keekorok Airstrip transfers instead; if you are still choosing between the two sides, match your camp to its practical airstrip before any seat is issued.

Flights and arrival

How do you fly to Siana, and what happens on landing?

Flights reach Siana as scheduled per-seat services from Nairobi Wilson Airport, typically about 45 minutes airborne on a single sector. Conservancy strips carry fewer scheduled calls than the main reserve strips, so service to Siana is confirmed per booking rather than assumed from a timetable.

The rotation may reach you second or third

Scheduled services work a circuit of two or three strips. A call at Siana can be added or dropped according to that day’s bookings, which is why we confirm the routing with the carrier rather than publishing one.

Charter is the reliable single sector

Where a scheduled call cannot be secured for your date, a charter flies direct to the strip within your own window. Groups and tight connections are the usual reasons to price it.

PRICED PER AIRCRAFT, NOT PER SEAT
Your camp meets the aircraft

There is no terminal, no belt and no formalities. Bags come out of the pod onto the grass, and the transfer to camp is driven as a game drive across conservancy land.

TYPICALLY 20-45 MINUTES TO CAMP

Because conservancy service is less frequent than reserve service, a Siana itinerary benefits from being booked early in peak months. How per-seat rotations are built, and when charter earns its cost, is set out at scheduled flights to the Masai Mara.

What it changes

What does landing at Siana change about your trip?

Landing at Siana signals that you are sleeping outside the national reserve, and that changes three things: your nightly fee becomes a conservancy fee rather than a reserve fee, your camp can offer activities the reserve does not permit, and vehicle numbers at sightings are capped by the conservancy’s own rules.

The strip itself carries no fee for you. The fee follows the bed, so a guest landing here and then transferring to a reserve camp would pay reserve fees instead. Both fee structures, and what each funds, are compared at reserve vs conservancies.

Impact of flying here

What an aircraft costs this landscape, and what can offset it

Every flight into the Mara has a cost, and a strip on open conservancy land has a specific one. We would rather set both columns out than sell you a quiet conscience.

What the flight costs

  • Fuel per passenger. A light aircraft carrying a dozen people burns fuel that no itinerary choice removes. Offsetting reduces a ledger entry; it does not un-burn it.
  • Noise over open country. Movements carry across grassland where large birds and denning predators are sensitive to disturbance, particularly near the surface.
  • Easier access raises pressure. A strip makes remote country reachable, which brings revenue and visitors in the same movement. Caps exist because access alone does not regulate itself.

What genuinely counts against it

  • Stay longer per flight. The fuel is the same whether you stay one night or four, so additional nights improve the ratio more than any other decision you control.
  • Sleep in the conservancy. Your nightly fee here underwrites lease payments that keep this rangeland unfenced. It is the most direct payment a visitor makes to habitat.
  • Keep your distance at sightings. Ask your guide to hold back rather than close in, especially at dens and kills. Vehicle behaviour is within your control on every drive.
  • Offset with your eyes open. If you buy carbon credits, choose a verified standard and treat it as a contribution rather than a cancellation of the flight.

Some of what you will see from this strip is already listed as threatened. That is the reason for the caps, the leases and the distance rules — not a marketing frame.

Where we stand. Kambu Campers, our parent company, works as an eco-conscious Kenyan operator: the intention is to show this country at its best while being straight about how vulnerable parts of it now are. Those two things sit together rather than in tension — a guest who understands why a conservancy caps its beds usually values the sighting more, not less.

What that means in practice on this side of the Mara: we quote conservancy nights honestly against reserve nights instead of steering you to whichever pays us better, we never reduce the fee line to win a booking, and we will tell you when a shorter trip is the higher-impact choice per night. What we will not do is describe a flight as green, or attach a badge to this page that we cannot evidence. Where the money lands is set out in reserve vs conservancies.

Residual questions

Siana questions not answered above

Siana looks nearer to my camp than Keekorok. Why is Keekorok on my ticket?

Because access, not distance, decides it. Siana serves camps with conservancy access, so a reserve camp near the boundary is normally met at Keekorok even when the map suggests otherwise. Your camp nominates the strip and we restate it on the itinerary.

Is there a scheduled flight to Siana every day?

Conservancy strips carry fewer calls than the main reserve strips, and a call can be added or dropped with demand. We confirm service for your specific date with the operating carrier rather than quoting a fixed pattern.

What can I do here that the reserve does not allow?

Conservancy camps can generally offer guided walking and night drives under their own rules, neither of which is permitted inside the national reserve. Availability differs by conservancy and camp, so it is confirmed at booking: See Siana Fly-In Safaris.

What happens if the strip is unusable on my date?

The service re-routes to a neighbouring strip and your camp extends the transfer to collect you, which lengthens the drive rather than removing the day. Because seats, camp and transfers sit in one booking, that is one call: delays and cancellations.

Next step

Tell us the camp and we will confirm whether Siana serves it

We check service for your date with the carrier, confirm the pickup with your camp, and state the transfer and the fee basis in writing before anything is ticketed.
